Time to get back in a saddle...Legacy Farms of Jupiter

Hello Everyone
Saddle... not literally, although that is on my list too.
Many changes around me kept me very occupied for a while now. And it doesn't seem like it will slow down any time soon! But it is not fair to you that I didn't even stop for a second to say "Hi" for a while now.
I recently moved, and I am still trying to get situated in new house to make it my home. My computer was in old place for a while leaving me unable to work and just feeling weird without the connection with the outside world ... Very weird feeling. Are you addicted to the internet like me?
The fact that I didn't post anything for a long time doesn't mean that I wasn't out and photographing. The most recent equine photoshoot took place at the breathtaking farm of Deborah Berger in Jupiter.
Her gorgeous black P.R.E. stallion Conquistador Del Sol and beautiful dressage rider Jules Anderson of Teamwork Dressage were my models.

Jules was wearing Spanish style red dress, nicely contrasting with the stallion. It really brought a special mood to the scene. We started the session with the portraits of both on the ground. As soon as the girl sat in the saddle the time stopped, I was pressing the shutter like in a dream, catching the moments like little snowflakes on my hand, wanting to keep them forever.

Beauty is what makes me often take my eyes away from the camera and just stare. I am lost in a moment for just a split second, and then I remember that I really want to take that very moment with me...so I grab my camera and press the shutter, and press...

The session was wonderful. I was surrounded by the people who put so much heart into making everything work perfect during the photo shoot. Although we were all nervous, we had a great time. Laughter was filling up the morning air as everyone was working on setting up another shot.

Ladies, ponies and a boy

Two weeks ago I had a great photo shoot involving three ladies, three horses, pony and a boy. The day was gorgeous, horses squeeky clean, and ladies excited for the session. Me and my camera were ready for fun. The time went so fast... I had just too much fun!

It was interesting to work with so different personalities in one day. And I am talking about both, people and animals. Nothing gives me more joy to catch the moments that show it all. In my opinion there are the pictures that are perfect for framing, and there are pictures you will hold onto forever because they bring a smile or a tear ... they are just priceless... the moment that you never want to forget, that little spark, a connection. The love.

I am finding it remarkable that although I photograph for a while now, there are so many special moments I remember I captured... It happens that I am asked for a certain picture by the person I photographed in a past, and I can recall it instantly. I suppose it gives away the fact that I photograph with my heart as much as I do it with my camera.

New Year brings new things.

New Year brought many changes. My schedule changed. New events appeared on my agenda. My services expanded. Besides equine photography I started portrait photography, and shortly will be strating wedding photography as well. New opportunities to show my work just jumped into my arms leaving me stunned and excited!
There will be also changes in the blog ( I mentioned it already on Facebook). There is already new mailing list sign up button on right side. New pricing and service list will show soon. The calendar will be updated regularly, as the photo sessions are booked. The look of my blog will change slightly as well.
And hopefully my website will launch this year too.

Happy New Year Everyone!
I wish you all peace, harmony and prosperity.

Finally I am back to posting on my blog in order to keep you updated. It is one of my New Year's resolutions: to keep posting at least once a month. I know it is not that often, yet I cannot promise more frequent notes, since I am not really sure how my schedule will look like.

Last year was full of amazing events, many incredible things have happened to me, making my dreams come true... Photography became part of my life, part of my soul. It grew in me and now it IS me. There are people who I will be eternally gratefull to for all what they have done for me.
They were events that were leaving me speachless and are forever carved in my memory...
At the beginning of 2010 I barely wet my toes in the waters of photography, and 12 month later I have a handful of achievements, and work with one of the greatest behind the belt.
The main resolution for all of us, for every day should be: remember to dream. Dreams are coming true. And you do not need falling stars to make it happen (oh, but they surely help too ;) ).

SFHSA Schooling Show OCTOBER 9 ~ Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Hallo Everyone,

After a quite long break I am back blogging... There is really a lot I would love to share about with you.
Yesterday I was in Miami photographing SFHSA horse show. It is always a huge pleasure to be there. I enjoy tremendously very warm and friendly atmosphere. This time it was a double special day...

The show was dedicated to the Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All pink. All meaningful. All very special, but fun at the same time.
The staple, I should say Huge staple, was Jackie Suarez's Mini-Me group of students with the horses (see: www.mini-metherapypartners.com . I will write more about her and her program soon) . It was the sweetest bunch! My camera loved them.

Mini-Me had a very special message for everyone. With everyone's big effort, and amazing patience and cooperation of students and horses under Jackie's caring eye, and me climbing up the structures for better view, we finally got it:

Horses Healing Hearts is growing!

You probably remember when I first mentioned Horses Healing Hearts, the non-profit organization funded by Liz Olszewski. By now HHH took a group of children in need under its wings. But Liz doesn't rest. While the workshops for children are provided regularly, she is looking for more kids who could use her help.
Last Sunday I had a wonderful opportunity to photograph one of the workshops. It was very interesting to watch the interaction of the little boy with the horse. His focus on task involving leading the horse and giving a bath... I am so curious how his relationship with cute Fiesta will evolve, how he will start to open up and bloom. It will be wonderful gift for me to be able to photograph him again. Below there are few pictures. And the link to the gallery.

Due to the fact that recently I came across people who didn't have the slightest idea about the legal side of photo usage (ex: pulled off the internet, scanning purchased prints and posting the copies online, etc) , I decided it will be appropriate for me to cite a note that professional photographer: Sharon Packer posted on her Facebook profile. The article explains what is ok to do, what is not, and what are the consequences.

Understanding Copyright

Long ago, our forefathers intent for the future of the American culture was to continually stimulate new creative works. They wisely saw a land without creative innovation was indeed a cultural wasteland. The U.S. Constitution makes a provision for respecting copyright:

(United States Constitution, Article I, Section 8.8)

“The Congress shall have Power ... To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries”.

Copyright is the single greatest protection artists, photographers, architects, musicians etc. have to control

the use of, and to profit from the fruits of their creative efforts, and to enforce claims. Copyright is not intended to stifle the sharing of information, merely to guarantee the creators ownership.
It is a federal law, not state law. Consequently, the law is uniform throughout the United States. Through several international copyright agreements, copyright protection is effective essentially all over the world

HOW DOES COPYRIGHT RELATE TO ME?

Ownership of a book, manuscript, painting, photograph etc. does not give any ‘right’ to copy or to use the work other than for personal use. Even if you commission an original portrait, you would only be able to frame and display the work. Without permission, you cannot even make a holiday card from the painting.

Similarly, no one can photocopy an entire book without violating the copyright owner’s exclusive rights in the work. In fact, radio stations and jukebox operators have to purchase licenses to broadcast or play music even if they own the records they are using.

End-users of copyrighted material have the legal responsibility to obtain permission to use the work before doing so, and this permission is granted with a usage license from the copyright holder.

HOW DO I GET PERMISSION TO USE A COPYRIGHTED WORK?

Permission to use a copyrighted work is called a "license”. A usage license must be obtained from the owner of the copyright prior to using the work. The license can be oral or written. A simple letter or invoice is usually sufficient.

The usage license grants a certain user the right to use a work in a certain way, in a certain place, for a certain period of time. A license for a photograph should specifically state who the user is, how large the image may be used, how many times, in what specific media format(s), and for how long. Any uses not specifically granted in a license remain with the copyright holder, by law.

COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT

Making a substantially similar copy of someone's copyrighted image without permission constitutes copyright infringement. Even the simple act of photocopying a copyrighted image without permission can be an infringement. When there is an infringement, the owner of the copyright can sue for damages. All lawsuits for copyright infringement are brought in federal court, not state court. The penalties for infringement are substantial.

A lobbying group in Washington recently released "The Net Surfer’s Simple Guide to Copyrights", which distills U.S. copyright law into five maxims:

• If you didn't create a written work, art, photograph, or music, or obtain distribution rights to it, you don't own it.

• If you don't own it, you can't copy or distribute it.

• The author or owner must explicitly relinquish rights for a work to be placed in the public domain.

• Fair use allows copying of small portions of a work without the owner's permission, but only for criticism, education, and news reporting.

• When in doubt, ask for permission to use a work."

FINISHES AND RETOUCHING
I added additional charges for turning the photo to black and white or sepia upon request. Also there are three more fees to be added with your purchase if you inquire about the background adjustment. All services are time consuming, and are not included in a print price. If the background alteration will be requested, or black and white copy of colour image, and the fee isn't paid, the order will be processed, however there will be no changes made to the original image, except for the basic retouch.

NOTE: Basic retouch: all the pictures are colour corrected, cropped to best suit the chosen size, and have fixed contrast for the best presentation at no additional cost.

HHH & cooling vests

My friend Liz Olszewski with Horses Healing Hearts is offering a new product. She showed it to me a couple days ago. We had a little photo session, where she tried all the vests on to show different designs, and how it actually works. She will use all the pictures for the advertising. It was fun!

Liz was very kind and gave me one to use. I tested it the very same day and just loved it! The heat usually bothers me a lot during the training, and it always takes me a while to cool down. The vest kept me fresh, and minimized the impact of the heat: the result I was hoping for. Nice!!!

I am thinking to use it also during the horse shows I will be photographing during summer. I am thrilled with this idea!

Cyrene and Zack ~ Senior session.

I was so excited when Pilar asked me to photograph her daughter! She called me one day and said that she needed some photos for Cyrene's graduation announcements. Oh, I was so excited to do it!

The photo session with Cyrene and her lovely horse, Zack, was rescheduled three times. Due to the weather and the miscommunication. I think it was the most difficult part we finally got through, and last Monday I met with the two and a mom.

It was so much fun!

Afternoon light started to soften and cast more golden tones.

I really enjoyed photographing both, the girl and a horse, because their bond was so special.

It was a delight to capture smiles, kisses and hugs. I love being a part of special moments. It is an honour for me to be able to photograph them, and stop the time filled with memories forever. Lots of fun, and another amazing experience on my tab.

Time for the update!

Hallo to all! I realized I didn't write here for quite a while. You might be wondering what is happening. I must admit I was so busy that I barely could keep my head on surface buried under the pile of events and happenings. Most of them were/are good. Some of them are not, and those I won't mention.

In the last two months I faced many changes and challenges that completely absorbed my attention. They regarded all aspects of my life. I must admit that new situation I found myself in, is pretty intense, but in a good way, I think :).

I think it is enough of that mystery and I can proudly announce that recently I became a part of Horse Sports Photography, company founded by Sharon Packer !!! I met Sharon back in March on one of Sunlite Dressage shows held at Marco Bernal's facility. That was a coincidence, but the best one that could happen to me, and certainly one of the most important ones :)
A month later she kindly invited me to photograph a show in White Fences with her. And then another one. And other at Jim Brandon, and another, and... And now I have a wonderful friend and a teacher. I have learnt a ton already, but it is just a fraction of what I need, and want to learn. I was given a chance to work with professional equipment. It was like the first ride on a nice big horse, after riding your pony. Do you remember the thrill, the impression? :)

Many times I have tried describing the incredible set of events that led to it, but discovered that my abilities and also limits of human language prevent me to fully express an amazing luck that brought me to the place I am in. And I see that as only a beginning. Dreams ARE coming true. And don't you dare thinking different!

Going back in a time, it is only a year ago, when I bought my first "real" DSLR camera I started experiment with. And only last September I was given a chance to photograph my first horse show, which was SFHSA first show of the season in Tropical Park in Miami. I wouldn't be able to show how grateful I am for that chance and how special this group of people is to me.

As for the announcements, I am back in updating the blog more often. Expect to find lots of interesting information, and check my site often.

HAIR FOR OIL SPILLS PROGRAM

INSTRUCTIONS FOR HAIR / FUR / NYLON DONORS

FIRST, please sign up with our donor database program www.ExcessAccess.org
- Sign up is FREE & FAST
This way you have access to information on:

- an emergency oil spill near your area requesting hair

- a large scale emergency oil spill that needs wide scale donations

- our storage warehouse

- all warehouse mailing address changes

- Everyone can sign up. Salons, groomers, individuals... Everyone!

- NEXT, set aside a designated box (salons usually reuse a box in which shampoo was delivered)

- line the box with a plastic garbage bag so hair/fur can't slip out
- ideally, donate shampoed hair (but certainly don't include filthy hair / fur)
- any length is fine

- every type of hair is fine (straight, cy, all colors, dyed, permed, straightened...) but only HEAD hair, please!

- every type of fur / waste wool is fine
- sweep in all clippings, JUST HAIR, but please NO OTHER GARBAGE (gum, metal clips, paper cups, wrappers...)
- remember volunteers (sometimes young students) have to stuff this hair into booms and don't want to feel garbage or anything sharp

- tie the top of the bag and tape the box shut

- we also accept washed, used (even with runs) nylon stocking donations in a separate bag, please.

- we also accept other "natural fibers" horse hair, feathers... again, please, no other garbage or contaminants in with the hair/fur/ wool fibers...

Pet owners: Fur, horse hair and wool is fine. Fur is cy which helps more in making mats. It does seem that human hair has less natural oil and is more efficient in soaking up oil. So, we are finding the sweet spot of ratio fur to hair! Pet hair doesn't have to be shampooed - but we ask that it not be filthy, please.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE HAIR NEXT?

Loose hair can be stuffed into nylon stockings which we double up and tie together to make "booms" that surround and contain as well as soak up oil spills. See our youtube

We also sort through boxes of hair to make sure there is no garbage and then pay to send it off to nonwoven needlepunch factories to make batches of hairmats. These mats are for emergency oil spills and for oiled bird and mammal cages.
We are fundraising for mat production and for our own permanent warehouse here in California to make hair booms. We also believe that collection kiosks at US harbors will provide green jobs and booms for emergencies. We aim to create a green job program with pathway out of poverty for those transitioning out of foster care (at risk youth 18-22 years old). To help please check out our contribute page.

DID YOU KNOW? OIL SPILL FACTS

History of the mat & boom:

Matter of Trust is collaborating with thousands of salons throughout the US and abroad, that donate their hair clippings to soak up oil spills. Last year over 2,600 oil spills occurred in the world. They weren't all are high profile, but most had an impact on the environment. Phil McCrory, a hair stylist from Alabama, first discovered how hair can help. He was watching CNN coverage on the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill. He noticed the fur on the Alaskan otters completely soaked with oil. He began testing how much oil he could collect with the hair clipping from his salon. Phil then invented the hairmat which has other uses as well. Hair also provides a slow protein release which is excellent for flower growers. For more information on hair as a natural fertilizer, please see Phil and our friends at SmartGrow.

The US has over 300,000 hair salons and each cuts an average of a pound of hair per day. Salons generously pay out of pocket for postage to send their swept up hair clippings to our donated warehouse spaces. We do the fundraising for this program and outreach through placing our posters in participating salons and with the help of the press.

Help Stop Another Proposed Wild Horse Roundup !!!

Submit Comments By April 2!

Government proposes removal of more than 1,000 horses in Wyoming, claiming 1.7 million acres can only support 1,165 horses.

Please send the e-mail by April 2 to submit comments to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The BLM is continuing its business-as-usual roundup of wild horses. The latest proposal is to remove more than half of the 1,950 wild horses on 1.7 million acres of Herd Management Areas in southcental Wyoming.

This is the beginning of the BLM’s process to remove wild horses in the Adobe Town and Salt Wells Herd Management Areas in Wyoming. It’s important that we submit our comments now to oppose this newest proposed assault on wild horses.

The BLM claims that the Adobe Town Herd Management Area encompassing more than 472,000 acres can only have 610 to 800 wild horses and the Salt Wells Herd Management Area comprised of nearly 1.2 million acres can only sustain 251 to 365 wild horses.

Please submit your comments today. Protest against another massive Obama Administration wild horse roundup. Public comments must be submitted by April 2, 2010.

Hippotherapy: A New Therapy for Autism?

The word hippotherapy is derived from the Greek word "hippo," which means "horse." It describes physical, occupational, or speech therapy that uses the multidimensional movement of a walking horse to stimulate the rider and help enhance balance, good posture, mobility, coordination, and strength. Often, hippotherapy aids mental functioning, improves mood and self-confidence as well.

The rhythmic and multidimensional movement of the horse provides variable yet repetitive sensory stimulation to patients. That stimulation can be varied and manipulated by a trained therapist to fit a patient's needs and stimulate improved functioning of daily living. For example, physical therapists can use a variety of horse movements to improve gross motor abilities, such as sitting, standing, and walking.

According to the American Hippotherapy Association, hippotherapy is indicated for children and adults with mild to severe neuromuscular dysfunction. It aids impairments such as abnormal muscle tone; impaired balance, coordination, and sensory function; postural asymmetry; poor postural control; and decreased mobility. Hippotherapy has been used for conditions such as cerebral palsy (CP), developmental delays, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and autism.

Hippotherapy has been used in the U.S. since the 1970’s. However, it is still considered an experimental and investigational treatment because there is insufficient scientific evidence for its effectiveness in the treatment of CP, autism, and other conditions characterized by motor dysfunction.

A recent study by Bass, Duchowny, and Llabre (2009) examined the effects of a 12-week-long therapeutic horseback intervention on social functioning in children with autistic spectrum disorder. The results showed improved social interaction and less inattention and distractibility in autistic children. These findings indicate that hippotherapy may have a place in the treatment of children with autism. However, more studies need to demonstrate its therapeutic effectiveness before hippotherapy is widely recommended as a treatment for autism.

The main focus is infant, child, and adolescent health, but there are also children’s movie reviews, information about pets, and tips on money and budgeting for families.

Articles on the site provide evidence-based information about simple and complex issues of parenting, common childhood illnesses, developmental milestones, and behavioral issues. In addition, the site allows parents to email a nurse practitioner with questions related to family health.

The Real Simple magazine selected Plugged In Parents as one of the best websites with practical parenting information.

Just as a reminder: digital files are available on my website. You can purchase it in two forms: low-resolution file (good to post on Facebook, etc.) or hi-resolution (good for printing any size of photos, sharing with family, on Facebook etc). After you place the order, I will upload the file which will be sent to you for further use. Please choose the option from the pricesheet on the right side of the picture you like. This is a new thing on my site: CDs. I will be able to offer the cd or dvd with the copies of the files of your choice. The price is yet to be determined. But please, submit the inquiry if you are interested. I will post more details about this item soon on my blog.

COLLAGES

I am offering a new product: collage. You can email me with the inquiry and the links to the pictures of your choice you want to be a part of collage. You can suggest the size, number of pictures, colours, even design, if you have a certain idea of the final product. I will closely work with you on achieving the best final arrangement.

Although my main subject of photography are horses and all connected with them, I am also offering portrait and family sessions, senior shots, photographing events like birthdays, anniversaries, etc.

SFHSA Schooling Show 02.27.10 ~ Update on Photos

The show in Tropical Park was fantastic. Great atmosphere as usual. Although the weather decided to play tricks on us, hot hearts didn't lose the heat.
I already uploaded some candid shots (there will be more coming), all pictures from In Hand classes, and most of English, Gaited, and Saddleseat classes. Allow few days for all pictures to be uploaded to online gallery, but the ones that are already there, are ready to view :) Check back often!

On Days Like That...

On days like that I let myself get lost in a moment. I do not want to think about anything, just feel the nature. Listen to its heartbeat. To its kind words spoken in its language. If I only could I would wrap myself in the colours I find in the evening sky. I would braid the sunny threads into my hair, and lay down in grassy arms.

There is never too many sunsets to see... On days like that it is the best way to be: one on one with the nature.

Back in November, I had a small photo session with my friend Liz Olszewski. She needed some pictures for her website to promote the non-profit organization she was just starting, Horses Healing Hearts.

Horses Healing Hearts will be a gateway for children of alcoholics, the place where they can experience an amazing relationship with creatures who won't judge, hurt, or reject. The healing effect of horses' tender souls will help those children to overcome fears, to gain confidence and self-esteem. Horses will also teach them to trust and love again.

Three months ago Liz just had an idea. Today there is already group of people inspired by her idea and passion. Slowly the project starts to develop the way she imagined it. Sunset at Loxahatchee

Yesterday I met few Flickrs at Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee Wildlife Refuge. It was the first time I have met them, but somehow after few moments it felt like I knew them forever.
That was a truly amazing evening! And the sunset we all got to photograph was just breathtaking! Until last speckle of light I kept my eyes on a sky, and my camera working. And I caught only a tiny part of the performance of light in a sky. It was like indulging myself with the finest cheseecake topped with reach, decadent topping. I still cannot wipe the smile off of my face. Thank you for inviting me to this treat!

Well, after long fight with settings on website I finally managed to set up volume discount for purchasing multiple digital files:
for 3-4 files there will be 10% discount
for 5-9 files the discount of 15% will be applied
for 10 and more 25% discount will be given.

Last night I finally uploaded the rest of pictures to all galleries except Western Gallery (will do that tomorrow). Please, check the website for all proofs later.

I am happy to announce that DIGITAL FILES of your pictures are available. That means that from now on you will be able to purchase the high definition file for private use, like website, unlimited printing, sharing with family and friends. There will be also a low resolution file - web ready - availble to use as Facebook or other social networking site. Please note, that all digital files purchased are copyright protected, and may not be modified in any way: resized, cropped, enhanced, optimized, or otherwise changed from original file. The web ready file is $25, and hi resolution is $40. Starting Sunday there will be a volume digital discount available for buying multiple files.

SFHSA first show in New Year!

It took me only an hour to get home from Miami. I just drove on one wheel ;)

I was so frozen, that heat in my car turned to maximum didn't help me thaw... My husband, Josh, got the steamy bath ready for me; I finally found so needed relief from cold in bathtub filled with hot hot water. Now I am all warm and cozy. I only need my fuzzy blanket to be fully happy.

But I let the details take over... I just wanted to thank you all once again. I really had wonderful time, and felt at home welcomed friendly by everyone today. Although it was so cold, the warmth, I was greeted with, just made my day! It was my third time photographing the show in Tropical Park, and it seems that every time I enjoy it more.
It looked that everyone enjoyed the day a lot besides the temperatures we are not really used to here (well, I lived in colder climat but i never got used to ;) so I can count myself in).
Now get yourself and your horses warm, rest after exciting day and wait. I will start working on pictures tomorrow.

New Year's Resolutions and Old Year's Memories...

Here we stepped into the New Year's door with all resolutions, all hopes that the new beginnings always give. Left every day, and each moment of the Old Year behind, forgot of bad events, cherishing those that moved our hearts and souls.

I do not have the New Year’s resolutions. Well, I thought of some, but they never became a clear thought I could later follow to reach the goal. I think I still have the time. I decided this year that I will write down all that I want to accomplish, and hang the list above my desk as a reminder.

Have you made any New Year’s resolutions? I would love to hear of your ideas for the New Year.

As for the Old Year, I want to thank all of my wonderful customers I had throughout the year. My dream wouldn't be possible without your support. Special words of thanks belongs to Donna Fries, president of SFHSA, who let me photograph wonderful events organized by her this season in Tropical Park in Miami. Our relationship let me discover new side of the equestrian world, and meet truly wonderful riders who made the atmosphere of the show very warm and supporting rather than treating it as a cold competition for blue ribbon.

Another special word of thanks I have is for Michele Herrmann; for help and friendship throughout the years.

And here is my very special THANK YOU to all my friends who believed in me and held my hand throughout my photographic journey, not letting me wander away from my passion, to my sister Monika and my brother-in-law Darek in particular :)

I am looking forward to new days, new challenges and adventures.

Suncoast Dressage Show quick update

Good evening. The pictures of first three riders: Mary Jo, Ashley and Nila are all in galleries. I also uploaded some pictures of LeeAnn and Linda. More yet to come.
Just as a reminder, once the order is placed, the pictures are going to be cropped to fit the size, and color corrected. I need to stress that the resolution of large size photos is lower, and the medium size reflects sharpness of the photograph the best.

Suncoast Dressage Show

What a day! I must say a wonderful one for riders! And horses too. Some of them felt quite... let say: fresh. But everyone turned out great. it was fun photographing the event!

Kissimmee Prairie Preserve

Two weeks ago Josh and I made a trip up North to Kissimmee Prairie Preserve. We were hungry for a bit of adventure and wanted to walk, walk, walk! Compressed behind the desks eight hours a day almost every day, we wanted to stretch, run, and be lost in an open space where there was nothing else around us but nature. And you know how they say: "be careful what you are asking for"... Our wish was granted...!

We arrived there after noon. The place was gorgeous. We were ready to explore the wilderness. From the very moment when we stepped out of the car, we couldn't take our eyes from beautiful images nature painted for us.

There was a halo in a sky. According to online dictionary: "A halo (ἅλως; also known as a nimbus, icebow or Gloriole) is an optical phenomenon produced by ice crystals creating colored or white arcs and spots in the sky. Many are near the sun or moon but others are elsewhere and even in the opposite part of the sky. They can also form around artificial lights in very cold weather when ice crystals called diamond dust are floating in the nearby air".

The weather was perfect for a hike. We decided to take a loop that would approximately take us no more than two hours. And would still leave us time to take another trail before the end of the day. Oh boy, we couldn't be more wrong.

As we walked on a trail we saw Caracara that we took for Bald Eagle at first. We were fascinated by the view, and excited to see this rare bird!

The sun was right behind the bird. Just right after I took that photo, with my eyes following this gorgeous creature, I started walking forward. As I took few steps, I glanced at the road in front of me, and saw the snake, just inches away from my feet. It has his huge mouth wide open and pointed up... (my husband was claiming that the snake was just yawning... right!) !!! I jumped back in an instant, and the serpent hurried away. I snapped a photo to check what kind of snake it was. I made some reserach and it appeared I was almost swallowed by the vicious cottonmouth... phew!

Not far from were we started, Josh spotted a dear nearby our trail. We spent few good minutes squatting on a side of the road and watching a deer. This gorgeous male took his time examining us carefully. It was so quiet there, peaceful. Only my camera was breaking the silence. The deer didn't seem to be alarmed, but curious. It made me feel wonderful to see an animal not being threaten by the presence of humans. It was a great feeling.

At one point of our hiking adventure Josh and I realized that our maps weren't really helpful anymore; since the trail lost us, or we lost the trail... It was late afternoon, with no signs of any human presence anywhere. Grasshoppers buzzing, ocasional birds letting the song tear the silence apart, bees and flies dancing around. Sun was hugging us gently, but our hearts froze because of unexpected turn of events...

Although we kept moving briskly, my eyes caught few gorgeous moments worth photographing. We stopped few times just for a moment. We drank last drops of water we had with us. Another bottle was in a car, but...where WAS the car?! "Just keep walking" I kept repeating. I knew that we were going in the right direction, but had absolutely no idea how far we were from our destination. And the sun was walking away as we rushed ahead.

The sun was really low. Far far away, behind this kind creature, where this pasture ended, there was the entrance to the Preserve. But the pasture was as wide as it was long...and we had to walk along the fence. Still a long way. Even longer now, since the water blisters grew on our feet and every step was quite painful. I do not think we slowed down though.

If I was to make a sculpture of this day dreaming cow bathing in the warm light of the sun, I would call it "The Thinker".

Who cared about blisters, and aching feet. I just couldn't resist! Even if we were to spend the night laying on tha side of the road... It was all worth it!

The sun was gigling behind our backs, blowing last kisses before it fell asleep. We were still walking along the pasture fence when I took this last shot of the day. Instead of the sun to come out sharp, it focused on the grass on the left side. I still like this shot a lot. And to tell the story, after about 10-15 minutes we reached the road leading to preserve's office. We were told that main gate was locked at about 5.30-6 o'clock. It was 5.30 when we stepped on the road... but - oh how lucky we were!!! There was a car driving towards us!!! It was the park ranger driving home after long day spent at the park. This kind soul took us back to the parking at the main office, where we left our car. It was another 5 miles. And it appeared the gate wasn't locked yet! Yay! So we spent the night in our bed! Good times!

Keep in mind the processing time required for different items. As a review:

•Standard size prints (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, etc) - 1-2 Days
•Photo cards (4x6, 5x7, 4x8, etc) - 1-2 Days
•Enlargements, special sizes, all metallic prints - 2-3 Days
•Gift Items - 2-3 Days
•Canvas Wraps - 5-6 Days
•Folded Cards - 3-4 Days

The above dates are based on the turnaround time of standard prints and should be adjusted accordingly to allow for processing time of specialty items.

Please allow for ample time. Remember that there is no "tracking" of any orders sent via US Postal Service. Priority Mail does allow for a delivery receipt.

Big Cypress National Preserve 11.07.09

Two weeks ago we decided to see Big Cypress Preserve. I looked online to read about this amazing place a little bit. But I should have done some more research... It was over two hour drive, tens of alligators in a canal along the road and hundreds of white birds: egrets and ibis. At the destination there was only boardwalk mile long (both ways!! Kirby Storter Boardwalk) and a scenic drive by canal at Turner River Road. Well, we didn't drive further to explore the site, because we didn't have much time, and the sky didn't look promising.

The boardwalk wasn't too exciting. Swamp, cypress, baby alligator sunbathing. That was pretty much it.

Things turned around for us at the Turner River road. Dirt road leading along the canal with places where we could stop the car, and take time watch opposite side where alligators were catching last rays of sun getting ready for a good night. It was quite nice to step so close to dangerous water, that toes would almost touch it... No, not really. I know that alligators mastered camouflage art to catch the prey, and are exceptionally fast... I didn't want to become a dinner so I kept a distance. Few of them swam close to look at us with interest. I hope they didn't try to calculate if we were worth the effort. I prefer believe they were just curious.

We had an alligator moment, when I stood on the edge of the grass stripe separating me from water, trying to capture a beast relaxing on opposite bank. It was very serene and quiet. I said something to Josh, looking ahead through the viewfinder. At this very moment, just few feet away from me, a big gator splashed into the water and emerged immediately looking at me with astonishment. He was as much surprised as I was... I am glad I surprised him more! This was one of those moments when you realize how really close you were able to approach wild animal. No fences to stop them. No fences to stop me. It was amazing that we could see them from such short distance. But it will take time before I will go back there. Next places to go will be with long hikes to walk, walk , walk...

Three days ago I received an email I didn't expect, but which left me really excited: Dover Saddlery representative announced I won Dover Saddlery Photo Contest 2009 in category Dressage!!! I must say I shared this information with most of my friends and family already, but I still want to shout it out loud and share my energy with everyone! Well, you got me here, I love to brag about it, since this is first competition I have ever won. Not that I entered many of them, but just this one, and I must admit I kind of forgot that I submitted this particular photograph. Great surprise! Too Sweet will be very happy after I spend the prize gift card on her :)
